81,401,497 € for 281,991 MWh that stayed in the country works out at 288.67 € per megawatt-hour, in a month that averaged 151.10.
The first line is energy the country needed and got. The other two — 38,792,546 € together — come not from how much moved but from when: cheap hours to sell in, expensive hours to buy in. That is the price of a timing mismatch, not a loss.
Physical cross-border flows and commercial electricity trades measure different phenomena. ANRE data is shown as an independent official benchmark and should not be interpreted as an exact reconciliation.
Not an invoice. Cross-border electricity is not sold country to country: the markets are coupled and the physical flow is the outcome of a shared auction. These figures value the measured flow at this zone's own day-ahead price, so both directions can be compared on the same scale.
Flows are measured, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; hourly borders are spread across the four quarters they cover, so every megawatt-hour meets the price that was actually in force. Energy entering the country is not the same as energy consumed here — some of it passes through.

What balancing cost, in the last 24 hours
Generation and consumption never match perfectly. The operator covers the difference through the balancing market, and that energy has a price of its own. The bars show the cost of balancing in each 15-minute interval.

96 of 96 intervals have a published price. Prices are those reported by Transelectrica for each interval; the final ones are set at monthly settlement and may differ.
Positive imbalance = the system had energy to spare (surplus); negative = it was short (deficit). The cost is the imbalance price times the volume; in surplus the money flows the other way, so the bar is negative. A negative price is real: then whoever had spare energy paid to get rid of it.

Who consumes: the base, the work rhythm, the day
An estimate from the shape of the consumption curve, not a measurement by customer category — that is not published in real time. Three parts: what never stops, what runs in shifts on working days, what switches on during the day.

Over the last seven days consumption averaged 5,389 MW and ranged between 3,481 and 7,231 MW.
How it was measured: the median of the 02–05 hours over 8 Sunday mornings (4,714 MW) and over 32 working mornings, Tuesday to Friday (5,207 MW), across the last 8 weeks; the average over the last seven days. The parts are cut from one another in order and add up exactly to the average.
The parts are shapes of the curve, not customer categories: the base holds every household's fridge as well as a plant that never stops; the day holds single-shift factories too. “Industrial” and “household” would be words these data cannot defend.
The operator's consumption forecast
How much the country is expected to consume, hour by hour, according to the forecast the transmission operator publishes for today and tomorrow. The line is the forecast; the bars, consumption measured so far.

Inferred, not measured. Utility-scale solar farms do report, so we know their capacity factor right now — 49.9%, meaning 1,695 MW produced from 3,395 MW installed. The same sun falls on the whole country, so we apply that factor to the prosumers' installed capacity. The margin is tens of percent: a roof does not have a solar farm's tilt, and shading and snow are not in the calculation.
Today's storage, hour by hour
Deduced, not read from a key: the generation the feed includes in its total without itemising — by its behaviour, battery discharge. The bar is the hour's average, the dotted line the hour's peak power.

The Transelectrica feed has no storage key. The figure is the difference between the published total and the named sources: constant at night, near zero by day — the behaviour of a discharging battery. It is a deduction labelled as such, not a measurement.
How we estimated 206 g CO₂/kWh
This is an estimate, not a measurement. There is no official carbon-intensity measurement for this country, so we compute it from the production mix.

Denominator: 5,337 MW.
Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.

Romania's electricity system
Romania has one of the most balanced generation mixes in Europe: hydro, nuclear, gas, coal, wind and solar each contribute comparable shares, with no single source dominating. That balance shows directly in the mix chart above — and it is why the Romanian system rides out price crises more smoothly than neighbours that depend on a single source.
Its backbone is formed by the hydropower plants on the Danube and on inland rivers, largely operated by Hidroelectrica, and by the two nuclear units at Cernavodă, which together produce around 1,300 MW almost without interruption. On top of them come the wind farms of Dobrogea — among the largest in south-eastern Europe — and fast-growing solar.
Romania and its neighbours
The Romanian grid is connected to Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. The direction of the exchanges changes from hour to hour: on a day of strong wind in Dobrogea, Romania exports; on a windless winter evening, it imports. The flow table above shows the state right now, border by border.
The link with the Republic of Moldova has a story of its own: since 2022 the Moldovan system has been synchronised with the European one through Romania, and Romanian exports have become an important part of the neighbour's consumption.
Where the data comes from
The figures on this page come from the operational feed of Transelectrica, Romania's transmission and system operator, read every minute. They are raw SCADA measurements — not validated for settlement, but exactly what the national dispatcher sees.
When a value is missing, we show “—”, not zero: zero is a real measurement (solar really does produce zero at night); a missing value is something else. The full methodology, including how we estimate carbon intensity, is on the methodology page.
