Day-ahead market

How differently electricity is priced across Europe

The same day, the same hour, prices that differ tenfold. The difference between two zones measures how well they are connected, not an opportunity for profit.

The difference is not profit. A large spread between two zones almost always means the interconnector between them is saturated or missing. If energy could flow, European market coupling would already have equalised the prices — that is what it does. The figures below measure congestion, not an opportunity.

The ratio is missing where the cheap zone's price is zero or negative: “three times dearer than −5 EUR/MWh” means nothing. The absolute difference stays valid and is the figure that counts.
