Forsmark passes 1,000 TWh since 1980, equal to just over seven years of Swedish power use

The Forsmark nuclear power plant, described by Vattenfall as Sweden's largest electricity producer, reached 1,000 TWh of output over the All Saints' weekend, counted from the start of its first reactor in 1980. According to the company, the amount equals Sweden's electricity consumption over just over seven years.

The Forsmark nuclear power plant has passed 1,000 TWh of cumulative electricity production, Vattenfall announced on 2 November. The threshold was reached over the All Saints' weekend, 46 years after the first of the plant's three reactors entered commercial operation.

The numbers. According to Vattenfall, the output equals Sweden's total electricity use over just over seven years: the country consumed 134.2 TWh in 2025, a figure also given by Ekonomifakta. The reactors have electrical capacities of 1,103 MW (Forsmark 1), 1,121 MW (Forsmark 2) and 1,172 MW (Forsmark 3), or 3,396 MW in total. Average availability since start-up is 87%, against the 75% assumed at the design stage.

Background. Forsmark 1 entered commercial operation in 1980, Forsmark 2 in 1981 and Forsmark 3 in 1985. Output has been raised along the way: by 120 MW at Forsmark 2 in 2013 and by 100 MW at Forsmark 1 in 2024–2025. According to Vattenfall, citing IAEA statistics, Forsmark is the 13th plant in the world to reach 1,000 TWh, despite having only three reactors; Sweden's Ringhals plant passed the mark in March 2025.

Climate. The company estimates that Forsmark has avoided about one billion tonnes of CO₂ compared with producing the same electricity from coal. Energinyheter notes that the estimate is a hypothetical comparison, not a measure of Sweden's actual emission reductions.

Who owns it. Forsmark is owned by Vattenfall (66%), Mellansvensk Kraftgrupp (25.5%) and E.ON Kärnkraft Sverige (8.5%) and has around 1,200 employees, according to the plant's information page. Forsmark CEO Jerry Westerstedt said he is proud to lead an organisation that works hard to supply Sweden with fossil-free electricity around the clock, all year round.
