Physical cross-border flows

Electricity measured crossing every border in October 2026, valued at this zone's day-ahead price.

Physical exports 133,789 MWh estimated market value 22,280,825 €, at 166.54 €/MWh
Physical imports 325,362 MWh estimated market value 79,466,058 €, at 244.24 €/MWh
Estimated market value −57,185,233 € the month averaged 215.09 €/MWh
Border with Out, MWh at €/MWh In, MWh at €/MWh Difference €
Italy 89,169 137.50 325,360 244.24 −67,204,738
Malta 44,621 224.56 1 276.65 10,019,505

57,185,233 € for 191,572 MWh that stayed in the country works out at 298.50 € per megawatt-hour, in a month that averaged 215.09.

  • Energy that stayed, at the month's average price 41,205,592 72.1%
  • What came in arrived above that average 9,483,520 16.6%
  • What went out left below it 6,496,121 11.4%

The first line is energy the country needed and got. The other two — 15,979,641 € together — come not from how much moved but from when: cheap hours to sell in, expensive hours to buy in. That is the price of a timing mismatch, not a loss.

Official validation AWAITING OFFICIAL ANRE DATA

Physical cross-border flows and commercial electricity trades measure different phenomena. ANRE data is shown as an independent official benchmark and should not be interpreted as an exact reconciliation.

All months, every border

Not an invoice. Cross-border electricity is not sold country to country: the markets are coupled and the physical flow is the outcome of a shared auction. These figures value the measured flow at this zone's own day-ahead price, so both directions can be compared on the same scale.

Flows are measured, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; hourly borders are spread across the four quarters they cover, so every megawatt-hour meets the price that was actually in force. Energy entering the country is not the same as energy consumed here — some of it passes through.

Wholesale prices for the interval covering this moment, bidding zone by bidding zone — countries with several zones appear once per zone, with its code in brackets. The average is arithmetic across zones, not weighted by demand: a small zone counts as much as a large one. The figures exclude network tariffs, excise duty and VAT.

The Transelectrica feed has no storage key. The figure is the difference between the published total and the named sources: constant at night, near zero by day — the behaviour of a discharging battery. It is a deduction labelled as such, not a measurement.

How we estimated 268 g CO₂/kWh

This is an estimate, not a measurement. There is no official carbon-intensity measurement for this country, so we compute it from the production mix.

Σ(source generation × source factor) / Σ(generation), over positive values, with life-cycle factors.

The factors are life-cycle values — they include construction and fuel, not just combustion. That is why solar, wind and nuclear are not zero. Source: IPCC AR5 WG3, Anexa III, Tabelul A.III.2 (mediane), version 1.

How the renewable share is computed

Σ(renewable sources, positive values only) / Σ(all sources, positive only).

Numerator: Onshore wind, Solar, Biomass, Run-of-river hydro.

Denominator: 2,490 MW.

Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.
