What balancing cost, in the last 24 hours
Generation and consumption never match perfectly. The operator covers the difference through the balancing market, and that energy has a price of its own. The bars show the cost of balancing in each 5-minute interval.

288 of 288 intervals have a published price. Prices are those published by SEMO every five minutes (Imbalance Price Report, BM-025); the thirty-minute settlement price may differ.
Positive imbalance = the system had energy to spare (surplus); negative = it was short (deficit). The cost is the imbalance price times the volume; in surplus the money flows the other way, so the bar is negative. A negative price is real: then whoever had spare energy paid to get rid of it.

Who consumes: the base, the work rhythm, the day
An estimate from the shape of the consumption curve, not a measurement by customer category — that is not published in real time. Three parts: what never stops, what runs in shifts on working days, what switches on during the day.

Over the last seven days consumption averaged 3,948 MW and ranged between 3,233 and 4,627 MW.
How it was measured: the median of the 02–05 hours over 8 Sunday mornings (3,241 MW) and over 28 working mornings, Tuesday to Friday (3,372 MW), across the last 8 weeks; the average over the last seven days. The parts are cut from one another in order and add up exactly to the average.
The parts are shapes of the curve, not customer categories: the base holds every household's fridge as well as a plant that never stops; the day holds single-shift factories too. “Industrial” and “household” would be words these data cannot defend.
The operator's consumption forecast
How much the country is expected to consume, hour by hour, according to the forecast the transmission operator publishes for today and tomorrow. The line is the forecast; the bars, consumption measured so far.

The forecast is the transmission operator's, published on its own platform — not a model of ours. It is revised during the day; for each hour the latest issue is shown. The running hour, in the bars, only shows what has accumulated so far.

What EirGrid and SEMO publish and no other country shows: grid frequency minute by minute, the operator's own carbon figures, the share of non-synchronous generation, and the wind and solar forecast next to what was actually produced.
Grid frequency, last hour
The frequency of the island's synchronous system (Ireland and Northern Ireland), minute by minute: the minute's average and the band between its minimum and maximum. The target is 50 Hz.

System margin, today

The intraday auctions, against the day-ahead price
The SEM market holds three intraday auctions after the day-ahead one: IDA1 the evening before, IDA2 in the morning, IDA3 at midday. Each re-corrects the price for the hours that remain.

The difference against day-ahead is computed over the SHARED hours, not over whole averages: IDA3 covers only the evening, and its average next to the day's average would only have said that evenings are expensive. Intraday results are published late — verified: the auctions of 8 and 9 September 2026 appeared only in the night of the 10th — so the day shown is a finished one. The prices are the Republic's market (ROI); Northern Ireland has its own prices in the same document.
Northern Ireland, today
The island's other half: its own demand and generation, hour by hour, plus the Moyle cable to Scotland. The operator is SONI; the dashboard is shared with EirGrid.

Northern Ireland has no country code of its own (it is GB-NIR) and shares the SEM bidding zone with Ireland, so the price is common and is not counted twice. The gap between demand and own generation is covered from the Republic and through Moyle; it is not a country's “import” but the balance of half an island. SNSP and frequency are not published separately for it: the system is synchronous across the whole island.
What the data centres consume
In Ireland, other people's computers are a quarter of the country's electricity. The official statistics count them separately, quarter by quarter: the coloured part is the data centres, the rest is everyone else.

“Metered consumption” means what passes through meters, not the system's generation: energy consumed on site, behind the meter, is not included. The figure is quarterly and appears about six months late, so it does not compare with the live consumption elsewhere on this page.

How the renewable share is computed
Σ(renewable sources, positive values only) / Σ(all sources, positive only).
Numerator: Onshore wind, Solar.
Denominator: 2,471 MW.
Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.
Consumption — 30 days
185 points, PT60M resolution. Long ranges are served from precomputed aggregates — a one-year chart from per-minute data would push hundreds of thousands of points into the browser for nothing. Our archive starts at 2015-01-01 00:00 UTC.
