Physical cross-border flows

Electricity measured crossing every border in August 2026, valued at this zone's day-ahead price.

Physical exports 867,377 MWh estimated market value 108,170,030 €, at 124.71 €/MWh
Physical imports 1,982,250 MWh estimated market value 330,009,844 €, at 166.48 €/MWh

221,839,814 € for 1,114,873 MWh that stayed in the country works out at 198.98 € per megawatt-hour, in a month that averaged 152.17.

  • Energy that stayed, at the month's average price 169,648,082 76.5%
  • What came in arrived above that average 28,374,673 12.8%
  • What went out left below it 23,817,059 10.7%

The first line is energy the country needed and got. The other two — 52,191,732 € together — come not from how much moved but from when: cheap hours to sell in, expensive hours to buy in. That is the price of a timing mismatch, not a loss.

Official validation AWAITING OFFICIAL ANRE DATA

Physical cross-border flows and commercial electricity trades measure different phenomena. ANRE data is shown as an independent official benchmark and should not be interpreted as an exact reconciliation.

All months, every border

Not an invoice. Cross-border electricity is not sold country to country: the markets are coupled and the physical flow is the outcome of a shared auction. These figures value the measured flow at this zone's own day-ahead price, so both directions can be compared on the same scale.

Flows are measured, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; hourly borders are spread across the four quarters they cover, so every megawatt-hour meets the price that was actually in force. Energy entering the country is not the same as energy consumed here — some of it passes through.

Wholesale prices for the interval covering this moment, bidding zone by bidding zone — countries with several zones appear once per zone, with its code in brackets. The average is arithmetic across zones, not weighted by demand: a small zone counts as much as a large one. The figures exclude network tariffs, excise duty and VAT.

What balancing cost, in the last 24 hours

The source for this country does not publish this dataset. Nothing is estimated in its place.

Who consumes: the base, the work rhythm, the day

An estimate from the shape of the consumption curve, not a measurement by customer category — that is not published in real time. Three parts: what never stops, what runs in shifts on working days, what switches on during the day.

archive up to 13/09/2026, 06:00:00

The base, non-stop
3,697MW

The work rhythm
494MW
11.0% of the week's average · how much more a working night carries than a Sunday night: the shifts
The day
316MW
7.0% of the week's average · what exceeds the working-night floor, on average: offices, shops, homes awake

Over the last seven days consumption averaged 4,507 MW and ranged between 3,156 and 6,018 MW.

How it was measured: the median of the 02–05 hours over 8 Sunday mornings (3,697 MW) and over 31 working mornings, Tuesday to Friday (4,191 MW), across the last 8 weeks; the average over the last seven days. The parts are cut from one another in order and add up exactly to the average.

The parts are shapes of the curve, not customer categories: the base holds every household's fridge as well as a plant that never stops; the day holds single-shift factories too. “Industrial” and “household” would be words these data cannot defend.

The Transelectrica feed has no storage key. The figure is the difference between the published total and the named sources: constant at night, near zero by day — the behaviour of a discharging battery. It is a deduction labelled as such, not a measurement.

How we estimated 87 g CO₂/kWh

This is an estimate, not a measurement. There is no official carbon-intensity measurement for this country, so we compute it from the production mix.

Σ(source generation × source factor) / Σ(generation), over positive values, with life-cycle factors.

The factors are life-cycle values — they include construction and fuel, not just combustion. That is why solar, wind and nuclear are not zero. Source: IPCC AR5 WG3, Anexa III, Tabelul A.III.2 (mediane), version 1.

Numerator: Solar, Biomass, Run-of-river hydro, Hydro reservoir, Geothermal.

Denominator: 4,673 MW.

Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.
