Physical cross-border flows

Electricity measured crossing every border in September 2026, valued at this zone's day-ahead price.

95.1% of the month's hours measured

Physical exports 301,429 MWh estimated market value 38,053,785 €, at 126.24 €/MWh
Physical imports 871,285 MWh estimated market value 127,431,575 €, at 146.26 €/MWh
Estimated market value −89,377,791 € the month averaged 145.44 €/MWh
Border with Out, MWh at €/MWh In, MWh at €/MWh Difference €
Germany 193,331 130.44 322,735 145.14 −21,623,324
Sweden 56,151 69.28 344,241 162.13 −51,921,888
Denmark 51,947 172.20 204,308 121.28 −15,832,579

89,377,791 € for 569,856 MWh that stayed in the country works out at 156.84 € per megawatt-hour, in a month that averaged 145.44.

  • Energy that stayed, at the month's average price 82,877,636 92.7%
  • What came in arrived above that average 715,235 0.8%
  • What went out left below it 5,784,920 6.5%

The first line is energy the country needed and got. The other two — 6,500,155 € together — come not from how much moved but from when: cheap hours to sell in, expensive hours to buy in. That is the price of a timing mismatch, not a loss.

Official validation AWAITING OFFICIAL ANRE DATA

Physical cross-border flows and commercial electricity trades measure different phenomena. ANRE data is shown as an independent official benchmark and should not be interpreted as an exact reconciliation.

All months, every border

Not an invoice. Cross-border electricity is not sold country to country: the markets are coupled and the physical flow is the outcome of a shared auction. These figures value the measured flow at this zone's own day-ahead price, so both directions can be compared on the same scale.

Flows are measured, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; hourly borders are spread across the four quarters they cover, so every megawatt-hour meets the price that was actually in force. Energy entering the country is not the same as energy consumed here — some of it passes through.

Wholesale prices for the interval covering this moment, bidding zone by bidding zone — countries with several zones appear once per zone, with its code in brackets. The average is arithmetic across zones, not weighted by demand: a small zone counts as much as a large one. The figures exclude network tariffs, excise duty and VAT.

How we estimated 164 g CO₂/kWh

This is an estimate, not a measurement. There is no official carbon-intensity measurement for this country, so we compute it from the production mix.

Σ(source generation × source factor) / Σ(generation), over positive values, with life-cycle factors.

The factors are life-cycle values — they include construction and fuel, not just combustion. That is why solar, wind and nuclear are not zero. Source: IPCC AR5 WG3, Anexa III, Tabelul A.III.2 (mediane), version 1.

Caution: 48.7% of production comes from sources with weak factors (biomass, waste, unattributed output). The figure is indicative and not suitable for cross-country comparison.

How the renewable share is computed

Σ(renewable sources, positive values only) / Σ(all sources, positive only).

Numerator: Biomass, Offshore wind, Solar, Onshore wind.

Denominator: 1,831 MW.

Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.
