About power from coal
The category combines hard coal and lignite — kept apart in our data where the source separates them, because they do not pollute equally: lignite emits ~1,054 g CO₂/kWh, hard coal ~820. They are the highest carbon intensities in the system.
In most European countries, the chart on this page declines from year to year — coal leaves the system as renewables come in and emission allowances grow more expensive.
