About power from natural gas
Gas plants are the system's balancing weight: they start and stop quickly, so they cover demand peaks and the gaps left by wind and sun. Their chart is often the mirror image of the renewables.
Flexibility has a cost: gas is often the source that sets the market price, and its emissions (~490 g CO₂/kWh in our estimate) are half those of coal, but far from zero.
