About hydropower

Hydropower has three faces: run-of-river plants produce as much as the river carries, reservoirs produce when the system needs them, and pumped storage is storage — it uses energy to pump water uphill and recovers it later, with losses.

That is why pumped storage does NOT count towards the renewable share: the energy it recovers is the energy put into the pumps beforehand, wherever that came from. Run-of-river and reservoir hydro, on the other hand, are renewable.
