Physical cross-border flows

Electricity measured crossing every border in September 2026, valued at this zone's day-ahead price.

94.9% of the month's hours measured

Physical exports 78,462 MWh estimated market value 10,868,076 €, at 138.51 €/MWh
Physical imports 78,362 MWh estimated market value 11,314,793 €, at 144.39 €/MWh
Estimated market value −446,717 € the month averaged 152.67 €/MWh
Border with Out, MWh at €/MWh In, MWh at €/MWh Difference €
Greece 16,623 184.85 34,501 104.81 −543,140
Kosovo 35,357 128.14 4,709 159.33 3,780,283
Bulgaria 3,313 55.08 36,031 179.16 −6,272,886
Serbia 23,169 133.03 3,121 158.00 2,589,026

446,717 € for 100 MWh that stayed in the country works out at 4,448.42 € per megawatt-hour, in a month that averaged 152.67.

  • Energy that stayed, at the month's average price −15,331 -3.4%
  • What came in arrived above that average −648,798 -145.2%
  • What went out left below it 1,110,846 248.7%

The first line is energy the country needed and got. The other two — 462,048 € together — come not from how much moved but from when: cheap hours to sell in, expensive hours to buy in. That is the price of a timing mismatch, not a loss.

Official validation AWAITING OFFICIAL ANRE DATA

Physical cross-border flows and commercial electricity trades measure different phenomena. ANRE data is shown as an independent official benchmark and should not be interpreted as an exact reconciliation.

All months, every border

Not an invoice. Cross-border electricity is not sold country to country: the markets are coupled and the physical flow is the outcome of a shared auction. These figures value the measured flow at this zone's own day-ahead price, so both directions can be compared on the same scale.

Flows are measured, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; hourly borders are spread across the four quarters they cover, so every megawatt-hour meets the price that was actually in force. Energy entering the country is not the same as energy consumed here — some of it passes through.

Wholesale prices for the interval covering this moment, bidding zone by bidding zone — countries with several zones appear once per zone, with its code in brackets. The average is arithmetic across zones, not weighted by demand: a small zone counts as much as a large one. The figures exclude network tariffs, excise duty and VAT.

How we estimated 335 g CO₂/kWh

This is an estimate, not a measurement. There is no official carbon-intensity measurement for this country, so we compute it from the production mix.

Σ(source generation × source factor) / Σ(generation), over positive values, with life-cycle factors.

The factors are life-cycle values — they include construction and fuel, not just combustion. That is why solar, wind and nuclear are not zero. Source: IPCC AR5 WG3, Anexa III, Tabelul A.III.2 (mediane), version 1.

How the renewable share is computed

Σ(renewable sources, positive values only) / Σ(all sources, positive only).

Numerator: Hydro reservoir, Onshore wind, Solar.

Denominator: 764 MW.

Pumped-storage hydro and waste are not counted as renewable — the first would double-count energy, the second is partly fossil and its biogenic fraction cannot honestly be separated.
